1.  How does RoseDog.com help me get noticed?
Do you need "connections" to succeed as a writer?  Do you need to live in the right part of the right town?  Is success as a writer more about who you know that what you know?  When it comes to succeeding as a writer, we say the best playing field is a level one, so we offer all writers an equal chance to showcase their talent.

But we don't bury your work under masses of manuscripts.  We make your work as visible as that of the next writer for the people that count - agents and publishers.  We also know that it costs agents and publishers time and money to discover new writers.  So we designed our site to meet their business needs.  Our search engine and work organizer help agents and publishers evaluate manuscripts quickly and effectively.  Our software tracks what they've read and clears unwanted manuscripts out of the way.  It lets agents and publishers share and discuss your work with colleagues at the touch of a button.  It puts them in touch with you quickly if they like your work.

By offering agents and publishers these time- and cost-saving functions (at no charge, with no fancy software to buy or install) we hope to increase your chances of being noticed.

We also maximize your exposure to agents and publishers by showcasing your manuscripts 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, worldwide, so you can sell your work to any publisher, anywhere.

And we're not exclusive; you don't have to choose between RoseDog and the rest.  Mention your work on RoseDog in query letters and in conversations – make it easy to read your work online with no commitment and there's more chance you'll be read.

2.  How do you attract publishers and agents to RoseDog.com?
Discovering and promoting authors is a costly business for agents and publishers.  So we focus our promotional efforts around one central message: RoseDog.com is designed to meet the business needs of agents and publishers.  Our success in focusing on these needs is what distinguishes us from other sites.

The core of our strategy to attract agents and publishers is summed up in two words: fast and free.

Free means no fees.  Fast refers to software we designed to ensure agents and publishers get to the work that interests them quickly and efficiently.

We provide agents and publishers with everything you feel they need to know about you and your work.  We process this using high-performance software and present it to them through an efficient work organizer.  And we don't clutter their horizons with stale material.  Our software tracks what agents and publishers have read and what their response is – so they can keep a manuscript under consideration, organize it into folders for later review, forward it to colleagues for comment and follow up, or never see it again - all at the touch of a button.

In a nutshell, we offer agents and publishers free access to a large pool of changing literary talent and we give them the means to process it quickly, effectively, at no charge and without leaving their desk.

3.  How is RoseDog.com different from other sites showcasing writers' work?
Thanks to cost-saving software that processes incoming manuscripts without human intervention, we are able to showcase your work at little cost to you - only $24.95 per year. That's about $2.08 per month.
4.  How do agents or publishers interested in my work contact me?
Agents and publishers make the initial contact with you through our site's messaging system.  Check to see if you have received messages from them (or from readers and writers) each time you sign in.  The next step is up to you, though we do encourage you to find out as much as you can about the agent or publisher before you respond to them.
5.  Do you keep my personal information confidential?
We never display your email address on our site and ask you to delete any such personal references from manuscripts before posting them to our showcase.

Biographical information you submit in support of your work is available only to agents and publishers registered with our site.  Your email address is kept strictly confidential and is used by RoseDog for administrative purposes only.  Agents and publishers make their initial contact with you through our messaging system and the next step is up to you.

Any demographic information we request is collected solely to attract the advertising that enables us to control the costs of the services we offer.  This information may be offered to third-parties, but only in the form of aggregated information that is not personally identifiable to you.  For more information on privacy please see our Terms of Service.

6.  How does my Account Statement help me track responses to my work?
Your Account Statement provides data on activity around your manuscript.  It shows how many times your manuscript features in searches and how many people opened your manuscript.

This information is made available to agents and publishers when your work features in the results of searches they initiate.

7.  Are there fees for showcasing my manuscript(s) and what are the benefits of membership?
For only $24.95 per year, you may post as much work as you like. That's about $2.08 per month for unlimited access to RoseDog's showcase, your own RoseDog email, lectures, articles, classified ads, success stories, news, and other features we know you will find useful as a writer.

Your work will be available to more than 150 agents and publishers for less than the cost of copying and submitting your manuscript to just three.

Your RoseDog email lets you communicate with other members and discuss your work and theirs, talk about writing tips, and exchange critiques.

8.  Who can submit a manuscript?
Any author writing in one of the languages we currently accept (see below) and who accepts our Terms of Service.
9.  Which languages do we accept?
We are currently accepting manuscripts in English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Portuguese, Danish, Norwegian and any other language using the same character set.  All writers should check their manuscripts after posting and contact us if they detect any irregularities.  Our site is currently in English only, as is the registration form that submitting authors complete online.  But you may use any of the qualifying languages to complete the registration form.
10.  Is there a limit to the length of the work I submit?
No.  You may post part or all of your manuscript.  However, bear in mind that certain agents and publishers prefer work that has not appeared in its entirety elsewhere.  Overall, you may then feel it is therefore wiser to showcase only as much of your work as is necessary to invite interest and demonstrate your talent.
11.  What if my work is not yet finished?
You may submit work that is finished or unfinished, depending on your objectives.  If your objective is to attract agents and publishers, you should understand that it makes very little business sense for them to invest time reviewing work that is not yet finished.  When you post your work, you will be asked to indicate the status of it and, if it is not finished, the date by when you expect to finish it.  Agents and publishers will in all likelihood decline to read unfinished work.

However, if your objective is to receive comments, suggestions and encouragement from fellow writers and readers, then posting unfinished work may attract the type of constructive criticism you are seeking.

12.  Are there any types of manuscript that we do not accept?
Language: See the section above.

Technical symbols: At this moment, we are unable to accept manuscripts containing mathematical and technical symbols in the actual body of the text.  These symbols may however be used in illustrations.  Our instructions for submitting manuscripts and illustrations are simple and clear and we guide you through the whole process.

Poetry: The software we developed to receive and post incoming manuscripts without human intervention makes it impossible to represent complex line patterns.  Poets that are happy with the way we format our manuscripts (see the next FAQ) are warmly encouraged to showcase their work.

Content and Copyright: We only accept manuscripts from writers who agree to our Terms of Service, which include but are not restricted to important conditions dealing with copyright and acceptable content.

13.  How will my manuscript be presented/ formatted?
Every writer gets equal exposure on RoseDog.com. To manually format each manuscript (the original submission and any number of revisions) would force us to charge large listing fees. This was unacceptable to us - we want to open doors to writers, not close them.

So we resolved the problem by developing software to receive and post your manuscript to our showcase without human intervention. This permits us to showcase large amounts of work at little cost to writers.

As part of this process, all manuscripts are therefore showcased in "plain text". This means that formatting such as bolding, underlining, and italics is not seen. We are confident writers will consider this a very fair trade-off for low-cost and equal showcasing of their work. We invite you to visit our showcase to see the results for yourself.

While you are browsing the showcase, take a look at EasyRead. EasyRead is software we have designed to show your work in the best possible light. It allows readers to choose font types, page size, and background colors to suit their individual taste.

14.  How can I make the best of showcasing my manuscript?
RoseDog.com is equipped to receive large amounts of manuscripts and still offer all writers an equal chance to make themselves visible to agents and publishers visiting our site.  To make the most of this opportunity, take great care when you register your work.  Describe your work in as much detail as you can and supply autobiographical information to support your efforts – such as professional or personal experience, literary awards you may have received, previously published work or reviews.

Also, pay particular attention when submitting the synopsis of your work.  Be brief, watch out for typos, and make sure you express what makes your manuscript worth reading.  Don't forget to describe the audience you are writing for and how your work responds to your readers' needs.

15.  What about plagiarism and rights?
You retain all rights to your work but give RoseDog.com permission to display what you post to its showcase.  In terms of plagiarism, you may feel more confident if you showcase only a sample of your work.  A couple of pages from your novel are hardly of any value when separated from the finished product.  Bear in mind also that certain agents and publishers prefer work that has not appeared in its entirety elsewhere.  Overall, you may then feel it is therefore wiser to showcase only as much of your work as is necessary to invite interest and demonstrate your talent.  The choice is yours.  You may also wish to obtain copyright for your work, in which case you should consult the appropriate agencies for more information:
  USA - lcweb.loc.gov/copyright/
  Canada - cipo.gc.ca
  UK - www.patent.gov.uk/dpolicy/faq.html
  Australia - www.copyright.org.au
16.  How often can I update my work?
As often as you wish.  Bear in mind only that your manuscript is unavailable in the showcase for as long as it takes our software to replace the current version with the new version.

Also, if an agent or publisher opens your work on Tuesday, feels it is not what he or she is looking for and excludes it from all future searches, your revised version, submitted on Friday will continue to be excluded.

This makes simple business sense – agents and publishers don't want to review work more than once and a few minor changes are unlikely to influence their original opinion.

The moral here is simple – try to get it right first time, and revise it if your changes make a substantial difference.

17.  How do I showcase my work?
Showcasing your work with us is simple.

First we ask you to register as a Member.  This provides us with the contact information we need to receive work from you.  (You membership number also authorizes you to post new work, update your current work, remove your work from the showcase, receive messages from agents, publishers and readers, and check interest in your work through your Account Statement.)

Next, we ask you a series of questions designed to elicit information on your work and your background as a writer.  Your responses to these questions feed the search engine and work organizer which help agents and publishers get to the kind of writers and writing they are interested in fast and efficiently.

Then you send us your manuscript via email.  We explain exactly how to do this – it's simple and efficient.  Providing all the appropriate steps are taken by you, we undertake to showcase your work 24-48 hours after receiving it.

If you are ready to register, choose this link.

18.  How do I promote myself once I'm showcased?
Writing isn't the end of your efforts.  You need to promote yourself.  One way we help you manage this is by providing data on the number of times your work is visited.  You receive this information in your "Account Statement" and we make this data available to agents and publishers when your manuscript turns up in their search results.  So encourage friends and colleagues to visit your work.
19.  How do I communicate with readers and writers visiting my work?
Readers and writers who are members of RoseDog.com communicate with each other through our messaging system and use their address book and message folders to organize their contacts.  Your email address remains confidential.

If for any reason you no longer wish to receive messages from a particular member, simply send an email request to us, including the other person's membership ID.

20.  What are FlashBios?
FlashBios are modeled on the combination of photo plus biographical text found on the dust cover of published books.  Agents and publishers registered with our site have the option of viewing your FlashBio when your work features in the results of their searches.  The FlashBio is an attractive tool for promoting your work.  You have the option of creating one when you first register as a Member and amending it at any time.

This is an example of a FlashBio:

21.  How do I update my FlashBio?
You can create a FlashBio, update your current one, or add a photo by going to the Writers home page, signing in, and choosing the option 'Update Your FlashBio...'.
