A Publishing Alternative
The twenty-first century has brought rapid advances to the book-publishing field. One of the more exciting and pragmatic ideas has been the use of a printing technique known as “Print on Demand.”
As the name implies, books are prepared for printing, stored as digital files, and printed only when there is demand for the book. Instead of the publisher or author expending the money to print a supply of books, then warehousing the books in anticipation of sales—as in the traditional publishing process--books are printed only when orders are received. Books can be printed quickly and usually shipped to the buyer within forty-eight hours.
This revolutionary printing technique allows for as few as one book to be produced cost-effectively. In the “old days” a minimum press run of 500 or 1,000 books would be required for the publisher to achieve such reasonable printing costs.

Dorrance Publishing Co., Inc.’s imprint RoseDog Books takes advantage of print on demand technology to bring authors’ books into print. The result is an attractive paperback book suitable for distribution in any bookstore; but, since we don’t print a book until we get an order, the author’s costs for publication is a fraction of the cost of traditional subsidy publishing.
The RoseDog imprint allows for the author to have the benefits of traditional subsidy publishing, such as creative control, and ownership of the work along with higher author earnings, at a significantly lower cost. Additionally, RoseDog titles can be published much faster than traditional subsidy titles.
Each RoseDog title is also made available as an e-book.
The Company Behind the Imprint
Dorrance Publishing Co., Inc. has been working with authors to bring their manuscripts into print for over eighty years. As the oldest, largest, and premier author services company in the world, we have developed the RoseDog Books imprint with our company mission statement, "Building lasting relationships, one satisfied author at a time” as the cornerstone.
How It Works
The author provides to RoseDog the text of the book in a digital format on a computer disk. We can accept most PC or MAC word processing formats; we will accept paper manuscripts for an additional fee.
Unlike our traditional Dorrance Publishing titles, RoseDog imprints will not be edited. What is provided to us is what ends up being printed in the published book.
After our receipt of the text of the book in a digital format, one of our designers will design the book text pages and create the “front matter” for the book. The front matter consists of the title and copyright pages.
After the pages are designed, our art department creates an original four-color cover design for the book.
Once the author approves both the text and the cover design, the book is uploaded to our web sites and available for purchase in both the print-on-demand traditional book form as well as in the e-book format.
When a book is ready for sale to consumers, a copyright application is submitted to the Library Of Congress in the author’s name. At this time the author may begin to promote the book. Or, if the author has selected our supplemental promotion package, we will create and distribute the specified materials.
